the UNEARTHING
The UNEARTHING is an international exchange, site-specific installation dance theater performance and educational event, using local unused warehouse space ( donated by Monticello and Associates llc (http://www.whatisix.com/) ) to house an evening length work as well as leading free public educational workshops through THE BRIDGE ARTS INITIATIVE (www.thebridgepai.com/). Sponsored by The Living Education Center for the Arts (http://www.livingeducationcenter.com/), created by @hand productions (http://athandproductions.org/) and presented by Zen Monkey Project (zenmonkeyproject.com), this multi-faceted event continues the ever-strengthening ties between Charlottesville, VA and Puebla, Mexico, by inviting Mexican dancers and musicians for 2 months to join the U.S.A. cast to teach in community workshops as well as perform. Balancing complex multi-layered concepts with intriguing entertainment is the goal of the UNEARTHING, as we tackle the themes of: energy, exchange, borders and unearthing the past. After it’s premier this winter in Charlottesville, the UNEARTHING will travel to Mexico in the spring to participate in the International Dance Festival PERFORMATICA (http://www.performatica.org/ ) and support the community of Xananetla, through Mural Ciudad (http://pueblaciudadmural.wordpress.com/) as the exchange is complete with the USA cast experiencing the rich culture in Puebla.
FREE COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS
One of the most important aspects of this project is offering a series of free community workshops addressing: local issues of energy use, the U.S.A./Mexican border challenges, exciting approachable ways anyone can make a difference in our community, straight up awesome dance, music and art workshops as well. Within the mission of L.E.C., @hand and ZMP is the deep believe that art and education go hand in hand. In order to truly inspire deep change and awareness, we believe that people need the visceral and emotional connection to learning that; music, art, dance and film can ignite. Using all the skill sets available to our cast we will also work with after school at risk kids to encourage them to see worth within them selves, so as to be able to see their connections to the world, and how awareness of our responsibilities to our community and its responsibility to us can lead to an empowering action to be part of it. We will also offer 3 weekend workshops to the whole community, young or old, of any background.
The FREE COMMUNITY WORKSHOP SCHEDULE is up!!!! All of the workshops happen in the month of Janurary.
THE INSTALLATION
Within this incredible space @ the IX, UVA’s graduate sculpture class, local sculptures and guest artists will add their voice in pieces they wish to show case in the theme of this work, adding another layer of communities intersecting.@hand will construct an installation made of found objects and the discarded, creating an alternate universe for the audience to be led through as the dance performance unfolds, ending in our salon/saloon, where they can explore the installation (where everything is for sale) and buy!buy!buy! Live original music by the UNEARTHING’s musicians will create a festive atmosphere as folks mingle, drink and peruse the installation for pieces of art to buy. All the $$$$ from the sale of the installation will be split between the UNEARTHING, and Heartwood (http://www.heartwood.org/) and i love mountains (http://ilovemountains.org/), 2 activists groups based in Virginia and West Virginia superbly dedicated to protecting the incredible mountains of their state (and surrounding states) from being blown up to extract the coal that charlottesville (and huge amounts of the usa and the world) use for energy.
THE PERFORMANCE IN CHARLOTTESVILLE
In the performance of the UNEARTHING, we will create moving visually intense images based on our research and our responses. We will poke fun at our own selves trying to live lightly as our carbon foot print is super large. There will be black humor, stellar dancing!!!!, alternative universes created, magical imaginings made before your very eyes, incredible music!!!!!!! and beautiful beautiful layers of our original collaborations within dance, music, art and film.

THE PERFORMANCE IN XANANETLA
The UNEARTHING will travel to Mexico in the spring with a bare bones production. Leaving behind all of the installation, costumes and lights (hopefully it is all sold !!! ), we reset the piece in an abandoned furniture factory in Xananetla, an old barrio in Puebla that is reclaiming its story with in Ciudad Mural Project, part of a COLLECTIVO TOMATE project. Taking the musical and physical essence, and paring down our cast, we will recreate the piece with nothing but the space and daylight, contrasting the piece made in the USA created with discarded materials, powered by bikes, or not, in the evening with a roof. We are very excited to see how this will unfold as we participate with a celebration of the completion of the murals, as well as many dance festivals in the region.

THE UNEARTHING es una ambiciosa colaboración internacional entre bailarines, artistas de teatro, escultores y músicos de México y Estados Unidos que se manifestará como una performance/instalación site-specific y salón, así como por talleres públicos en Charlottesville, Virginia, en Enero y Febrero de 2012.
THE UNEARTHING busca unir y sumergir a todos sus participantes, voluntarios y audiencia en cuatro temas interconectados que actualmente causan grandes crisis en nuestro mundo: energía intercambio, fronteras y desenterrar el pasado. Después de su estreno en Estados Unidos, THE UNEARTHING viajará en la primavera a Puebla, México para participar en Performática www.performatica.org, un festival internacional de danza basado en el intercambio; así mismo, será remontada en Xanenetla, como parte del proyecto Ciudad Mural http://pueblaciudadmural.wordpress.com
¿De qué se va a tratar THE UNEARTHING?
Las presentaciones de THE UNEARTHING tendrán lugar en un viejo gimnasio/caverna dentro del Ix Complex, en el centro de Charlottesville (el cual ha sido donado generosamente por Monticello & Associates/Ix). Los graduados de escultura de la Universidad de Virginia así como escultores locales y artistas invitados transformarán el espacio en un universo alterno y mágico donde presentaremos lo que consideramos como los lados luminosos y obscuros del mundo en que vivimos actualmente.
La audiencia será itinerante, en constante movimiento, así como los performers; viajarán juntos a través del pasado y hacia el futuro, por encima, por debajo y entre fronteras. Bailarines y clowns se burlarán de nuestros casi absurdos esfuerzos por vivir tranquilamente a pesar de nuestra huella digital de carbono. La audiencia participará durante la performance con un proyecto que apoya a las granjas orgánicas locales. Con música original y danza intentaremos trascender lo literal al encontrar la poética en la pieza.
Habrá un salón con música en vivo donde los miembros de la audiencia podrán degustar deliciosas bebidas y caminar alrededor de la instalación, hablar con los bailarines, aprender de los clowns, aprender de la investigación que hemos llevado a cabo, hacer conexiones con las organizaciones que están haciendo una diferencia local e internacionalmente. Este espacio abierto podrá dar lugar a una vivaz discusión sobre política o bien a unas danzas alocadas y compra de arte, o a todo lo ya mencionado.
En el mes previo a las presentaciones, habrá una serie de talleres facilitados por los artistas invitados, en las instalaciones de Bridge PAI www.thebridgepai.com y en McGuffey Art Center www.mcguffeyartcenter.com, ambos en Charlottesville. Los talleres tratarán sobre el uso de energía, los retos que representan las fronteras entre México y Estados Unidos, emocionantes maneras en las que cada uno de nosotros podríamos hacer una diferencia en nuestra comunidad, y una mezcla de nuestra experiencia de danza/música/arte.
Al mismo tiempo que creamos estos eventos comunitarios, estaremos documentando todo en filme, fotografía y grabaciones. Futuros proyectos podrían incluir: un documental, un libro de fotografías, un sitio web para ayudar a los residentes de Charlottesville a involucrarse para llevar a cabo maneras sustentables de vivir y una grabación de la música original creada para la obra. Nuestro deseo es honrar a todos aquellos que dieron su tiempo y talento a través del proceso para ayudarlo a cobrar vida más allá de un momento.

*cubrir gastos de transporte y vivienda de los artistas en residencia, ya que tendrán que suspender dos meses de sus vidas en México y California para crear esta nueva pieza en Charlottesville. Y ayudará a la misma causa al re-crear la pieza en Xanenetla, Puebla, México.
*conseguir ciertos materiales de producción y promoción que no pueden ser obtenidos por intercambios u otras maneras. Por supuesto que buscaremos exhaustar las opciones antes de usar dinero para este punto. Así es como vivimos. ¡Y esto es lo que nos ayuda a hacer mucho más con toda la ayuda que nos puedas dar!
